What Makes an Event Memorable? It’s Not What You Think.
Sometimes the best event ideas aren't about adding more. They're about solving the right problem.
It was the early 2000s, and I was planning a gala with a Fire + Ice theme.
I'd seen an ice feature at another event and had an idea: why not build the entire bar out of ice?
It was unexpected, fit the theme perfectly and had the potential to become a memorable focal point for the evening.
So I turned the idea into a sponsorship.
The funny part? It almost didn't sell.
The Bigger Problem
At the same time, we were dealing with another challenge.
Our silent auction was located in the cocktail space outside the ballroom. But many guests were arriving shortly before the program began and heading directly into the ballroom.
That meant less time browsing the auction, fewer eyes on the items and potentially fewer bids.
The event didn't need another decorative element.
It needed a reason for guests to arrive early—and stay in that space.
That's when the ice-bar sponsorship became much more than an ice bar.
One Idea. Multiple Objectives.
We positioned the ice bar in the cocktail and auction area and paired it with a complimentary drink for guests who arrived early.
The sponsor's team welcomed guests and distributed the drink tickets, giving them an opportunity to interact directly with attendees rather than simply having their name or logo displayed somewhere in the room.
And guests had a reason to stay.
They mingled. They enjoyed the bar. They spent more time browsing the silent auction.
One activation was now accomplishing several things at once:
A better guest experience. Meaningful sponsor engagement. Increased traffic to the silent auction. And purposeful use of an underutilized space.
Same creative idea. Much more strategic purpose.
And It Worked.
Later that evening at the post-party, the sponsor called me over on the dance floor.
“You better not give this sponsorship to anyone else next year.”
I laughed and said, “Deal—but next year, it's gonna cost you more.”
That's still one of my favorite event stories because the ice bar itself wasn't really the point.
The strategy behind it was.
A great event isn't simply a collection of beautiful or clever ideas. Every element is an opportunity to solve a problem, create value or move guests toward an objective.
Sometimes, the best solution is already sitting in your event plan.
You just have to give it the right job.
